6 Tips using mens drapes with female clients

Why should you use mens drapes even if you’re working primarily with women? Let’s set the scene here. If you have a starter drape set from us already, they are all block colours, all in the same mercerised cotton fabric which all feels exactly the same.

This was done deliberately, to cut down on the possibility of clients saying, ‘But it reflects against my face because it’s a glossy fabric’ and all those other wonderful insights that used to come up in consultations when we didn’t know any better.

So, why not add a few interesting variables in texture and colour combinations to your collection? Here are my 6 top tips.

Putting clients into boxes

It seems there are restrictive colour analysis systems out there which are upsetting quite a few image consultants. All the more reason for those of us with the common sense to question all this, stuff the system, and put the client first. Putting clients into boxes should be a hanging offence!

It’s the overall look that matters. I absolutely agree that any hair, eye and skin combination can be found in all the seasons, all the tonal directions, all the expanded, extended, flow, or whatever system you use.

For instance, the ridiculous idea that dark-skinned clients can only ever be Autumns or Winters is completely ridiculous.

You’ll need to be sat down for this one. Last week I did a wardrobe weed-out! I know, I swore blind I’d never do one ever again but this was for my most excellent friend of over 40 years, Kafburga. She was petrified that I would stand in front of her wardrobe and shout out in abject horror, “Where is all the colour?” and that I would end up taking away virtually everything in black bin liners.

So we went for lunch first at a local pub. If she intended this to soften me up, she was very much mistaken. I was a woman on a mission! And it gave me the perfect opportunity to put the client first and ask her the questions I would spend at least 20 – 40 minutes asking any other client before we went anywhere near the wardrobe door

What does a colour consultation client want?

What would a colour consultation client want – Being draped to within an inch of her life just to make the image consultant happy? Or being asked what results she wants, and for the consultant to make the client happy by fulfilling her needs? How would you like to be treated? Stuff the system. Put the client first.

In the online course ‘Fabulous Colour Analysis’ we filmed 2 days of live training with 6 gorgeous image consultants from England, Scotland, Cyprus and Mexico. All of them had already had their personal colour analysis done elsewhere and on the course Sahlburga told us her colour consultation story

Universal colours that suit just about everyone

Lilac (or lavender) is a marvellous universal colour that suits just about everyone. So no matter which season you are, you could easily add it to your holiday packing or your capsule wardrobe. As an example, if a bride discovers that her four bridesmaids are one of each season, then I might suggest she dress them all in lilac or some shade of soft lavender as they will all then stand some chance of looking good.
